Inter-Ethnic Marriage (Case Study of Arab and Sasak Marriage in Lombok)

Abstract

This research is a field research using a qualitative approach. Methods of data collection are conducted by conducting interviews, observation, and documentation. The data analysis technique uses three approaches, namely data reduction, data presentation/ description, and drawing conclusions. The results showed that (1) the problem of ethnically different marriages between the Arabs and the Sasak in Lombok is a way to continue the legal lineage according to the state and religion. Marriage occurs because there is attraction between men and women who are old enough. Marriages between Arab and Sasak ethnic groups that took place in Lombok, almost in all cities / regencies on the island of Lombok, inter-ethnic marriages took place. There are inter-ethnic marriages between Arabs and Sasak ethnicities in Lombok which are endogamous, namely marriage of the same sex, ethnicity or race. Marriages like this are still maintained by the Arab community in Lombok. This was done on the basis of the influence of family law and inter-ethnic marriage. There are many cases of Arab ethnic marrying the Sasak ethnic group, whether the woman is from the Arab ethnic group and the man is from the Sasak ethnic group, and vice versa, and (2) the implications of different ethnic marriages between the Arab ethnic and the Sasak ethnic group in Lombok on tangible household harmony on three things, namely adjustment to the habits of a partner, communication patterns, and different family harmonization. In household life, it will not always be happy, flowing like water and growing like plants, but it takes a lot of process and patience in dealing with the problems that occur, especially the problem being studied is about inter-ethnic marriage. Therefore it is necessary to adapt to culture, regulate communication patterns between partners, and maintain family harmony by resolving conflicts that occur in the household caused by differences in each culture or ethnicity.
