Abstract

Digital Phubbing and Adolescent Deviant Behavior: A Case Study in Monjok Timur Village, Mataram City. Digital phubbing, defined as the act of ignoring a conversation partner because of excessive attention to a mobile phone, is increasingly observed among adolescents and is associated with the emergence of deviant behavior. This study analyzes the forms of digital phubbing that can lead to adolescent deviant behavior and examines its impact in Monjok Timur Village, Selaparang District, Mataram City. A qualitative approach with a case study method was used and examined through uses and gratifications theory. The subjects were six adolescents aged 15–18 years selected through purposive and snowball sampling, and the informants were three parents, a relative, a village office staff member, and a teacher. Data were collected through moderate participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation, analyzed with the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, and validated through source, technique, and time triangulation. The findings show that digital phubbing occurs in three forms, namely academic, friend, and parental phubbing, with friend phubbing being the most frequent. These forms are associated with ignoring others during conversations, harsh language, anger, mocking friends on social media, and declining discipline in learning. The impacts include disrupted harmony with family and friends, indifferent and individualistic attitudes, declining communication quality, cyberbullying and reduced empathy, and weakened emotional self-control. The gratification adolescents obtain from digital devices is individual in nature and is not balanced by social responsibility in real life.
