Abstract

The rapid diffusion of generative artificial intelligence (AI) into higher education has intensified a conceptual dichotomy between AI-driven efficiency and human empathy as the pedagogical core of lecturers' work, a tension that becomes strategically urgent within the emerging discourse of Human Capital 5.0, which envisions technology as an amplifier rather than a replacement of human values. This study conducted a systematic literature review (SLR) following the PRISMA 2020 reporting guideline (Page et al., 2021) to synthesize evidence on how lecturer competencies should be redefined to integrate AI efficiency and human empathy. Fifteen Scopus-indexed empirical and review articles published between 2022 and 2026 were analyzed thematically, using structured comparison across three dimensions: AI-efficiency manifestations, human-empathy evidence, and competency redefinition. The results show that AI efficiency is concentrated in facilitation, assessment automation, and administrative support, while human empathy is still empirically proven to be linked to the quality of teacher-student interactions, trust, and students’ psychosocial outcomes. Cross-study synthesis points to a convergence toward a three-layer competency model: technical-AI literacy, pedagogical-ethical reasoning, and relational-human competence, positioning AI not as a replacement for teachers but as a collaborative tool that still requires ongoing human oversight. This review contributes an evidence-based integrative framework to redefine teacher competencies in the Human Capital 5.0 era and its implications for institutional policies and professional teacher development.
